WAIKATO LYCEUM CLUB

HAPPY SOCIAL AFTERNOON ENTERTAINING PROGRAMME The worries of war were for a time forgotten yesterday afternoon by the large number of members who gathered in the lounge of the Waikato Lyceum Club to enjoy one another’s company and the very excellent programme convened by Miss G. Wyatt. A happy atmosphere was created by the lovely arrangement of spring flowers, and a cheery fire added a bright note. The first item was contributed by little Misses Berry and Robin Beckett, whose selections on the cello and piano were warmly received. Mrs J. J. Seales’ lovely voice was heard to advantage in two Maori songs, her third number being the popular melody “There’ll Always be an England,” and a veritable musical feast was offered to the audience in the three violin solos played by Mrs H. Biland. Mrs Hubert Hammond was the accompanist. An amusing one-act play by Alan E. Mulgan entitled “The Voice of the People,” was capably read by Mrs F. Bullock, Mrs C. L. Mac Diarmid, Miss G. Wyatt and Miss Gady Hodgson. At the conclusion of the programme a delicious afternoon tea was served and a happy conversational hour was spent. The president, Mrs Hugh Douglas, who thanked Miss Wyatt and the contributing artists, received the guests in a navy ensemble and a navy hat. Those present were:— Mesdames J. F. Vercoe, C. L. MacDiarmid, F. Bullock, F. Pratt, W. A. Schultz, E. B. Belworthy, F. G. Seccombe, C. Brett (Whangarei); J. J. Seales (Morrinsville), H. Valder, D. Robertson, L. Coldwell, Chatterton, G. Sheaf, G. E.
