KIEL CANAL ATTACKED
MUCH DAMAGE DONE FUEL DEPOTS DESTROYED (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received August 29, 3.15 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 28 Royal Air Force heavy bombers swiftly attacked the naval dockyard at Kiel on the night of Wednesday. Pilots and crews described how bombs straddled the mole and burst in other parts of the dock area. Heavy explosions, following one attack, culminated in a huge fire and a mass of black smoke, suggested that an oil store had been set on fire. Another raider reported that five large fires were raging when he arrived.
Another force of bombers attacked an important transformer station at Kelasterbach, near Frankfurt, scoring a direct hit. The crew of a plane declared that the whole target appeared to explode. Other raiders scored several direct hits on a aircraft factory at Augsburg, where Messerschmitts are assembled and also on an oil refinery ' at Mannheim. Others set fire to oil tanks at Eecdambes, near Bordeaux, also at Pauillac near Brest, both of which are important sources of fuel for Germany.
