NEGLIGENT DRIVER
FINE OF £1 ON FARMER TE AROHA STREET COLLISION A fine of £1 and costs was imposed on Ernest Robinson, aged 64, farmer, of Knighton Road (Mr N. S. Johnson) when he appeared before Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Hamilton, today on a charge of negligently driving a truck in Te Aroha Street oh August 17. No evidence was brought by the police on a charge of intoxication while in charge of the truck. Senior-Sergeant A. G. McHugh said that at 6.50 p.m. on August 17 Robinson made a wide turn while going into Te Aroha Street and collided with a stationary car. When the police arrived he was sitting in another car, and as it appeared that he had been drinking, he was detained. After examining him the doctor said he was not unfit to drive. He had not previously been before the Court. There was no connection between the liquor and the accident, said Mr Johnson. The smell of alcohol in Robinson’s breath when the doctor examined him was very slight. When he made the turn into Te Aroha Street he was dazzled by the headlights of an approaching car and was driving blind for a few seconds. There was no light on the stationary caf.
