HAMILTON AIRPORT

WAIPA COUNTY SUPPORi PLANNING OF SUBURBAN AREAS (Special to Times) TE AWAMUTU, Wednesday The agreement between the contributing local bodies for the acquisition of the Rukifhia aerodrome, for which a loan of £13,000 is proposed, was approved at the adjourned meeting of the Waipa County Council on Monday. It was pointed out that Te Awamutu and Ngaruawahia boroughs were not contributing and that the Hamilton Borough was assuming 76 per cent of the responsibility. It was estimated that the county’s liability would be for about one-eighth of the cost.

Reference was made to the desirability of town and regional planning for extra-urban areas in the county. Mr J. T. Johnson said that the question had been considered at a conference at Hamilton some years ago. At that time his opinion was that planning was unnecessary, but times had changed and it was now very important that some system should be evolved to orevent congestion. The growth in the urban areas was considerable and many questions arose which called for control by local administration and the whole matter should be gone into by the local authorities. The chairman (Mr S. C. Macky) agreed that careful planning was necessary and it was suggested that the three boroughs, Hamilton. Te Awamutu and Cambridge should work together. The engineer (Mr W. Graham Macky) explained that an attitude of drift would cause difficulties in time, particularly in the Hamilton area. The matter should be approached on the basis that some area at present adjoining boroughs would come into the' J ooroughs within a few years. Existing and proposed subdivisions would cause trouble. It might be found that the Town Planning Act would require amendment to meet the position of areas which might require reticulation for water and drainage. It was decided to convene a preliminary meeting of representatives of the Waikato and Waipa counties and the boroughs* of Hamilton, Te Awamutu, Cambridge and Ngaruawahia. At a later stage town boards could be consulted also.
