TROTTING

TRIALS AT CLAUiDELANDS HILLCREST HITS OUT DERBY LU PLEASES The going was dead and became progressively slower as the morning progressed at Claudelands today when the final trials of horses engaged at Epsom on Saturday took place on the middle of the course proper. Light rain early made for unpleasant conditions, among those to please most being Hillcrest, Belfast Jack and Derby Lu. Belfast Jack (Sims) was doing better than Fortex (Dunn) throughout a mile and a-half in 3.405, their last half-mile requiring 1.9. Belfast Jack went away evenly and will need only to do everything correctly on Saturday to possess prospects as he is bearing a particularly healthy appearance. Alcazar (Cockbill) was not extended at any stage of his work, being timed to traverse his final halfmile in 1.17 4-ss. Hillcrest (Cutts) again pleased by the manner in which he was revelling in his work, a length in front of Our McKinney (Vernall), over the concluding stages of a mile and a-half in 3.43, his final section requiring 1.9. will lack nothing on the score of condition for racing this week, while Our McKinney, who executed his work well this morning, is not without prospects of repeating last season's success if further rain falls to soften the tracks. Derby Lu Well Derby Lu (Norris, jun.) led Katene (Dunn) and Captain Scott (Vernall) over two miles, Albertini (Cutts) joining in over the last mile and ahalf and Meadow King (Moran) over the final half-mile. Derby Lu, who was always going well in front, ran his first mile and a-half in 3.59 and cut out the final half-mile in 1.9. Albertini broke in the concluding stages. Derby Lu is in splendid fettle and in the event of a heavy track at Epsom this week he will have to be considered in the Orakei Handicap. Cloverdale (Dunn) was jogged over a couple of rounds, and ran his last mile easily in 1.175. He is bearing a healthy appearance. Silver Countess (Primmer) worked freely over a couple of rounds.
