MINERS HURT
FIRE AND EXPLOSION ACCIDENT AT ROTOWARO EFFORT TO SEAL PORTION (Special to Times) HUNTLY, Thursday A fire which broke out in the Taupiri Coal Company’s colliery at Rotowaro early this afternoon resulted in an explosion which caused injuries to three workers. When the fire was discovered steps were immediately taken to seal the affected area. A brick and mortar wall was erected, and the work was nearly completed when the explosion occurred and caused the wall to collapse. Messrs James Lancaster. Evan Bryant and George Peel, of Huntly, were struck by the falling bricks and were caught by the fire. Mr Lancaster was the ‘most seriously injured, being severely bruised and burned. Mr Bryant was also injured and burned but less seriously. Mr Peel suffered minor injuries. Messrs Lancaster and Bryant were taken to the Waikato Hospital, while Mr Peel returned to his home. The work of sealing off the burning portion of the mine was renewed under the direction of the superintendent, Mr J. Watson, and was completed early this evening. Work in the mine will be carried on as usual tomorrow.
