Princess’ 10th Birthday Princess Margaret Rose, younger daughter of King George and Queen Elizabeth, celebrates her 10th birthday today. Born at Glamis Castle on August 21, 1930, she is four years younger than Princess Elizabeth. Hamiltonian’s Success in Sydney A cablegram was received in Hamilton this morning that Mr Keith i Priscott, of Hamilton, has won the baritone championship at Sydney Eisteddfod. Races and Weather “ If we get six or eight inquiries about the weather before 9 a.m. we can always tell that there is a race meeting somewhere,'' said Dr. R. G. Simmers, the senior meteorologist, addressing members of the Wellington Rotary Club. Bank Holidays Representations have been made by the Associated Chambers of Commerce to the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, with the object of i having the Banking Act amended so as to eliminate saints’ days from the list of banks holidays. At present St. George’s, St. Patrick’s and St. Andrew's Days are observed. Repairs To Tanker The Norwegian tanker Ole Jacob, which collided with the British motor-ship Armadale off Cape Campbell on the night of July 31, arrived at Auckland under her own power from Wellington yesterday. Work was begun on the damaged ship by about 50 employees of an Auckland engineering firm which secured the contract for the repairs. Roosevelt’s Chances “I will venture the prophecy that President Roosevelt will be re-elect-ed for a third term,” commented Professor L. M. Lipson, professor of political science and public administration at the Victoria University College, Wellington, when addressing a meeting in Hamilton last night. His subject was “The Domestic and Foreign Politics of the United States of America.” Comforts for Territorials The Hamilton Women’s Patriotic Committee have received over £2B, the proceeds of a special dance arranged by the Ritz Dance, for comforts for Waikato territorials when they encamp at Waiouru. In thanking the donors of the money, Messrs Menzies and Tristram, the committee have stated that the gift for this purpose is very welcome, as being a new camp, it is anticipated added comforts will cost a fair sum. Strengthening of Reserves The accounts of Grey and Menzies,' Limited, for the year ended June 30 show a net profit of £2998, against £3579 in the previous year and £4476 in 1938. The directors recommend dividends of 7 per cent, on both ordinary and preference shares, compared with 8 per cent, in the two previous years. It is also proposed to transfer £2OOO to reserve, making it £BOOO. The sum of £IOOO was transferred in 1939. Wrestlers at Waikeria An entertaining programme was provided for inmates of the Waikeria Borstal Institute last night when a visit was paid by Mr W. Shattock and his class of wrestlers. Several exhibition bouts were held and were appreciated by the spectators. Bouts to arouse particular interest were those between W. Shattock and R. Sorenson, and A. Newton and one of the Waikeria men. Mr C. Stubbs, secretary of the Waikato Wrestling Association, was the timekeeper. University Salaries The annual statement of accounts of Otago University reveals that Government grants increased between the years 1937-40 by £11,750, the major increases being Arts and General by £4750, and Medical by £4250. The treasurer comments that these increases enabled an improvement in the salaries of the teaching staff and the provision of an additional staffing standard. The salary of professors in the Arts and Science Faculty is now £IOOO, and that of full-time professors in the Medical Faculty ranges from £I2OO to £2OOO. Live Hare Coursing A decision to circularise kindred societies to ascertain their views on the question of approaching the Government to have live hare coursing banned was unanimously reached at a meeting of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Dunedin. It was further decided to gather relevant evidence upon the conduct of the Dunedin Club’s June meeting for the purpose of obtaining legal opinion on the advisability of launching a prosecution on the ground of cruelty. National Patriotic Fund
In response to the appeal by the Governor-General, Viscount Galway, chairman of the National Patriotic Fund Board, contributions received toward the National Patriotic Fund up to yesterday were £154,819. The latest list of acknowledgments of donations includes a further £617 from public service members, who throughout the country are subscribing voluntarily on a regular basis. Other substantial contributions during the past fortnight include £319 from the Church of England Military Affairs Committee and £125 from the people of Aitutaki, Cook Islands.
Invention by Soldier A radio device on which his son was working has been accepted by the War Office for further investigation, according to advice received by Mr Ballantine Burnnand, of Auckland. The son, Gunner G. A. K. Burnnand, is in Egypt. In a letter, Gunner Burnnand says:—“l have iust returned from an interview with our colonel. He has received confirmation from England that the device I was working on has been accepted by the War Office, and they are working on it. He gave me his congratulations and those of Major Gentry, G. 5.0.2, who told him he is going to let General Freyberg know about it.” Mr Burnnand said his son called the invention a radio adaptor, but that he had not been allowed to say more about it.
