TOPICS OF THE DAY

British Fifth Column ? “If the attempt to invade Britain fails—and it will fail—how will the war develop?” asks the Daily Express. “Remember 1806. Napoleon had conquered Europe as completely as Hitler. He was held up at the Channel. So he tried to starve England out. In the same way Hitler will try to starve England by closing the Straits of Dover, sealing up our east coast from bases in Norway, and bombing our ports. We will reply by closing the Mediterranean and blockading the whole west coast of Europe. Napoleon was overthrown by the uprising of the people of every country he had conquered, inspired by Britain’s continued resistance. Can we work to liberate Europe in the same way ? All the nations of Europe depend on our victory for their survival. We are fighting for their lives. But so far none of the neutrals have helped us, and they have not even allowed us to help them till too late. Instead of blaming these neutrals and speaking bitterly of Quisling and Leopold, we should learn from Hitler's methods. We can establish our own Fifth Columns of freedom all over Europe.”
