ACTIVITY AT ELLERSLIE
SEMI-FINAL GALLOPS ROYAL MESSAGE GOES WELL (By Telegraph.—Special to Times) AUCKLAND, Tuesday The seml-nnal gallops In connection with the Pakuranga Hunt meeting took place at Ellerslle this morning on the No. l grass track, the poles being 10 feet out. The going was much better than on Saturday, but It was still a trine on the heavy sld*. The best efforts were those of LlandalT, Stratford and Happlcoat, over half a mile, and Royal Message over five furlongs, while the best six rurlongs was credited to Miss Valerie. Valmlnt and Sliver Glow also put up a sound performance over seven furlongs. A number of horses were schooled, those to please most being vaalso and Valspear over the hurdles, and Lovelllt and British Sovereign over the big fences. Tybalt was the nrst out, completing six furlongs In 1.2 4 2-5. He was assisted over the last half-mile by Calula Boy In 5 4 2-ss. Calula Boy was going very comfortably at the finish. There was little between Kelly and Rival at the conclusion of seven rurlongs In 1.26 1-5. They ran the first half mile In 54 3-ss, and were some lengths clear of Hlnehau, who accompanied them. Llandaff Impresses Money Spinner reeled off five furlongs in 1.8 4-5, the last half taking 535. He was assisted by Arohatoon over the final three furlongs, which they covered In 40s. Both these hacks are making good progress. Bara Avis went very freely while running half a mile In 525, the first In 13 1 ss, and he was running on In good style at the end. Bournemouth did the -same Journey In 53 3-ss, and Marehby strode over three furlongs In 40s. Royal Message and Hot Shot wpre associated over five furlongs In 1.5 2-5. the first two laking 26 2-6 s. ft was a good trial on the part of Royal Message, while Hot Shot also worked well. Miss Valerie (Wiggins) came home from the six rurlongs post in 1.22 2-5. She ran the first three in 40 4 ss, but was not putting a great deal of dash Into her work over the last hair mile. l.landaff again Impressed over half a mile in 51 2-ss. the first taking 12 2-58. This time equalled the best of the mornlug. The novice. Flying Nay, shaded Golden Bonnet at the conclusion of four furlongs In 53 1 -ss. Golden Bonnet had a lot the worst of the weight*, though Flying Nay displayed very promising speed. Valmint Plen.sos Happlcoat and Boombs-a-Dalsy ran half a mile in 51 2 ss. Stratford, who was on the outer, pleased most. The best trial over seven rurlongs was that of Valmlnt. who shaded Sliver Glow, with Mllanlon and Bronze Emerald In that order. In 1.3 5 2-s*. It was a good trial for the Jelllcoe Handicap. Orate (Kerr; sprinted hair a mile on the sand In 51s. lie had a lot of speed on when he Jumped away, running the first furlong In 12 3-ss. Beeswing Kerr gave a better display than Bright Idea (Pascoe) over four hurdles. Vaalso (Burges*) and Valspear (Turner) gave a fast display over the same fences. Vaalso went a good deal better than on a former occasion. The Trimmer 'Williams) finished well clear of Red Appellant (Turner) over four hurdles in the centre. Over the Fences Beverley (Williams) led Clansman (Kerr) over the steeplechase fence* on the flat, both giving a satisfactory exhibition. Love lllt (Ritchie) British Sovereign Baker), f.elghton Buzzard < Turner > and Domination (Kerr) were associat'd over a round of country. Lovelllt and British Sovereign • were clear of the others at the finish, both Jumping attractively. Domination Tell at the first fence on the Hill, but was remounted and completed the course, while Leighton Buzzard did not shape nearly as wdi as on former occaal nc MfINU 'Williams' Joined them at the god wall and gave a good display over the remaining fence*. TAKANINI WORK The outside grass track, on which the poles were 10 feet out, was used Tor rast work at Takanlni this morning, but the going was cutting out. There was a good deal or Interesting work by Pakuranga candidates, the best efforts being those of Verulum. Grandora. Te Kawitl, Sureila, Gamos. Estre, Maxarn and Venture. Venture finished two length* in front of Vallmlto at the conclusion of «evon furlongs In 1.35. Venture worked particularly well. Flood Tide was sent over seven rurlong* and. while lie was not unduly bustled, he required 1.0 2-5 for his la*t five furlongs. One of the best efforts of the morning was that of Grandora, who gave M.vslto two lengths start and finished a similar distance In front in 52 1 Ds. His trial was impressive. Gold Money Song required 63 3-5 s for the same distance, as also did Orello, who finished a couple or lengths In front or Arvakur. Foxola and Lady Pay were together throughout half a mile, the last three furlongs taking 30 3-ss. Both w-ere travelling well at the llnlsh. Verulum was going better than Sureila at the conclusion of half a mile In 5 2s, This was the best of the morning over the distance. Verulum, who has yet to race, Is a full sister to Bronwen. Mazir’a Effort Te Kawitl went away from the six furlongs post, being joined by Gamos at the five. The latter got the best of the pick up. but they were on terms at the end. the last five taking 1.5 3-5. Both worked well. Glenconnell ran half a mile com fortably In 53 3-ss. Mazir beat King Louis by «ix lengths over » similar journey In There was little between Heroic Star and River Plate at the end of three fur long* In 38 4-ss. the former doing the better at the finish. Hunting Ree ran five furlong* fn 1.7 3 5, the la«t three m 41*. Valimeen strode leisurely over half a mile In 5 1 3-ss. Queen City 'Wiggins *howed a clean pair or heel= to Roval Huntress Parsonover five rurlongs in 1.6. K'erona and Kraal traversed three furlongs in in t r.s the latter, who was on tie «.i:t*lde. appearing to have the best • r matters Maxarn had a nicely run half-in'lc in 535. doing very well at the end. T.ovaaN took 53 3-58 for the *ame distance Proud Fot and Classic were on term* after five furlong*, but were not timed. They worked well.
