WOMEN’S GOLF

SOUTH AUCKLAND PLAY FIRST QUALIFYING ROUND MRS P. R. GLANVILLE LEADS Right from the start a good standard was set in the South Auckland women’s golf championships, which commenced at St. Andrews links today. The indications are that a keen contest will produce better golf than has been seen in the tournament during recent years. The general standard to-day when the first qualifying round was held was better than is usually produced during the qualifying stages. The holder of the title, Mrs P. R. Glanville, of Te Awamutu, led the first qualifying round with a score of 79. The majority of the lower handicap players failed to produce their best form, although Mrs H. McDonald, of Hamilton, played well during a round of 83. Several of the higher handicap competitors played well down to their handicap standard. The South Auckland championship is the principal title at stake and the qualifying rounds are being decided on gross medal scores. Handicap competitions are being played in conjunction with the scratch play. Results of the first qualifying round, bpth gross and handicap net scores being shown, are as follows: Mrs P. R. Glanville 79, 6—73. Mrs H. McDonald 83, 4—79; Mrs Seyb 84, 7—77; Mrs H. D. Johnston 84, 7—77; Mrs J. Wilson 85, 10—75; Mrs G. H. Bindon 86, 17—69; Miss M. Jefferd, 87, 4—83; Mrs F.
