LATE CAPTAIN SCOTT
HISTORIC BURIAL PLACE (By Telegraph.—Special to Times) PUKEKOHE, Sunday i The burial of the late Captain Joseph Corbett Scott, aged 102, who died at Epsom on Thursday, took place yesterday at a spot at the burial ground at the Pukekohe East Church which he himself chose. On a recent visit to the church, which he helped so effectively to defend against the historic attack by the Maoris on September 13, 1863, he walked over to a knoll in the grounds overlooking the valley that slopes away to Pukekohe and the far-famed Pukekohe Hill beyond, and, thrusting his stick into the ground to mark the site, had requested: “Bury me here.” The service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev. G. Budd, assisted by the Rev. W. J. Comrie, who is a member of a pioneer Pukekohe East family that settled in the district about two years before the engagement took place.
