WOMEN’S DIVISION

HAMILTON BRANCH j The monthly meeting of the HamI ilton branch of the Women’s Division I of the Farmers' Union was recently j held in the Y.M.C.A. rooms. Mrs Clements presided over an excellent attendance of members. Congratulations were conveyed to Mrs Ryburn on her election as Dominion vicepresident. After a lengthy discussion regarding soldiers walking from hospital after being discharged, it was suggested that a letter be sent to the Patriotic Committee asking for assistance for fares, when necessary, also that a petition be sent to the South Auckland Provincial Council to approach the Government for free train fares for the men when going home on sick leave. The reports were received from the following:—Mrs Vercoe (hospital visiting), Mrs Windsor (housekeeping), Mrs W. Godfrey (National Council of Women meeting). Nine balaclavas, four pairs of socks and eight scarves have been handed in from the branch to the Patriotic Committee. Also seven cushions and one large rug have been sent to the soldiers’ camp. Mrs McWhanneU, South Auckland Provincial council secretary, reported on the recent Dominion executive meeting held in Wellington. Mr J. McWhannell gave a most interesting gardening talk on the growing of dahlias, layering of chrysanthemums and the growing of vegetables. Mr and Mrs McWhannell were both accorded a hearty vote of thanks. TIRAU BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Tirau branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was well attended. Members stood for one minute in silent prayer for our Empire. Then followed an entertaining feature in the shape of .. impromptu speeches, covering a wide variety of subjects. Most of those present took part, and the opinions and ideas expressed proved very interesting, and in some cases, most laughable. The competition for six pikelets was won by Mrs S. Hetherington, with Mrs Hewson second, and Mrs J. Hetherington third. One new member was enrolled. The meeting closed with afternoon tea served by Miss Allen and Miss Hewson.
