FILM STARS CHARGED MONEY FOR COMMISSION (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LOS ANGELES, August 15 A county grand jury report accused film stars of contributing money and heading Communist filtration into the motion picture industry. The testimony included allegations against several celebrities affiliated with study groups, who could not be reco’gnised as Communists. Summonses to appear before an inquiry into “ Fifth Column ” activities in Hollywood were issued recently to five prominent people. They were Lionel Stander, actor; Herbert Biberman, director; Gale Sondergaard, his wife, who won an Academy award for a supporting role for her work in the film “ Anthony Adverse”; Samuel Omitz, writer; and Clifford Odets, the prominent playwright who wrote “ Waiting for Lefty,” “ Golden Boy ” and other much-discussed plays. It was reported last month that the Dies Committee inquiring into unAmerican activities had received a list of 42 Hollywood notables, alleged to be linked with the Communist Party.
