EXCITING EXPERIENCE

RETURN OF AIRMAN WELL KNOWN IN HAMILTON (United Press Assn.— fipp. Tel. CopvrljrM) LONDON, August 1 Although he was reported missing over Belgium in July, Pilot-Officer Derek Ward, of Whangarei. returned to his squadron after a fortnight’s excitement in escaping. Dressed as a Belgian peasant refugee he took 12 days to get back to Dunkirk and return to England by a motor tor-pedo-boat. His name had been removed from the squadron list, and at his family’s request, his car was sold, his bills paid and his bank account closed. The New Zealander who decorated his aircraft with a “coat of arms” of unlucky signs, Pilot-Officer Ward is well known in Hamilton. He was taught to fly at the Waikato airport by Flight-Lieutenant W. H. Lett and secured his pilot's license here, later joining the Royal Ail Force on a short service commission
