NEW ZEALAND HERO FASTEST AIR BATTLE BRITAIN’S NEW TRAP (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, August 16 Reports up to midnight showed that the “blitz-bombing” was continuing in many districts, including Wales and south-west and southeast England. Stories of the day’s and night’s raids continue to pour in. A New Zealand wing-commander was the hero of the day's fastest air battle. He was in the mess at an air station in north-west England when a Heinkel was sighted six miles away. He dashed to the tarmac, shot up in his Spitfire and destroyed the German in four minutes. A member of the Home Guard rushed out with a shotgun when a Heinkel crashed in a field and arrested five Germans. The pilot said: “I did not see your Spitfire. They are all too quick.” A German bomber, according to authoritative quarters, was caught by one of the aeroplane traps erected by the Ministry of Transport for the military authorities, and was completely wrecked, all the occupants being killed. The Berlin news agency ridicules Britain’s new air defence weapon, and says: “The latest British novelty is a net shot into the air to envelop aeroplanes. It lias proved to be a mere toy, and is unable to prevent any German formation from fulfilling its task.” The British Ministry of Supply has banned the production of Christinas
