POINTED SHOTGUN

YOUNG FARMER IN COURT DISPUTE BETWEEN BROTHERS An incident on a farm near Hamilton was detailed before Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Hamilton, today when a young farmer, whose name was ordered to be suppressed, faced a charge *>f presenting a loaded shotgun at another man. Defendant was represented by Mr J. F. Strang and the case for the police was conducted by Senior-Sergeant A. G. McHugh. The brother of defendant, at whom the gun was stated to have been presented, said the incident arose over some money owing to him on a stacker. He called at defendant’s farm in his lorry and was met by defendant with the shotgun in his hand. Witnessed was defied to remove the stacker, and when he made to drive his vehicle through the farm gate two shots rang out. When witness got out he found that two tyres were flat. Just before that defendant had pointed the gun at him. To Mr Strang witness said he had received an apology from his brother and was now prepared to live in amity with him. In the witness box defendant said he got the gun only to stop his brother from taking the stacker. He did not point the weapon directly at him. The intention to commit bodily harm did not enter his mind. He regretted what he had done. Defendant was convicted and ordered to come up lor sentence if called upon within 12 months, a condition being that he was not to possess any firearm.
