PEDESTRIAN’S DEATH
FINDING OF CORONER (Special to Times) MORRINSVILLE, Monday At the resumed inquest into the death of Vernon Charles Young on the Morrinsville-Tahuna main highway on July 4, the coroner, Mr G. Hedge, found that deceased died from a broken neck and other injuries received when he was struck by a motor-van driven by Edward Harold Alexander. Alexander said in evidence that he was returning to Morrinsville shortly after 5 p.m. when the accident occurred. He was alone in the van. He would be travelling at between 30 and 35 miles an hour when he noticed the lights of an oncoming vehicle. He then slackened speed and would be going at about 30 miles an hour when he passed. The headlights were on and they were in perfect order. He did not see any pedestrian on the road but remembered feeling a bump. It appeared that there was a lorry length between the two vehicles when the bump occurred, and he had no idea what caused the bump. In answer to Mr McGregor, witness said he had no liquor that day. In fact, he was a total abstainer.
