DECEPTIVE LETTERS
ARCHITECT BEFORE COURT “IRISH BACHELORS” DEGREE (By Telegraph.—Special to Times) PALMERSTON N., Monday Four charges of theft and one of using after his name letters calculated to deceive were admitted in the Police Court by James Carnegie, an architect, of Wellington. According to Detective-Sergeant Meiklejohn accused set himself up in business as an architect in Palmerston North last March. He had had printed after his name the letters F.R.1.8.A. Carnegie had advertised for tenders for houses and when three builders called he demanded deposits of six guineas from each. It was these moneys which Carnegie was charged with stealing. When interviewed he would not say what the letters F.R.1.8.A. stood for, except to suggest that it might be Fellow of the Royal Irish Bachelors’ Association. The accused was sent to gaol for two months on one of the theft charges and ordered to come up for sentence any time within two years on the others. In respect of the misuse of the letters he was convicted without penalty.
