MUTTON STILL DEARER

RISE AT FRANKTON ALL CLASSES IN REQUEST BEEF SLIGHTLY FIRMER A further rise in mutton values was recorded at the Frankton stock sale today, when the top price of 48s 6d for wethers represented an increase of 6s 6d on last week and was the best money paid at the yards for over three years.

All classes were in keen request and a rise of from 2s to 3s a head was general. Top money for choice ewes today was 34s 6d, which represented an advance of approximately 3s 6d.

A further indication of the mild seasonal conditions was provided by the fact that several pens of shorn wethers were on offer today. A keen demand was shown for this class and prices ranged from 28s 9d to 36s 6d. An average entry of beef was again in animated request and values usually showed an advance on late rates. The top price lor bullocks was £l6 11s, paid for three Polled Angus cattle. This was the highest money paid in the yards this year. Evidence of a keen demand today was provided in a line of ten bullocks averaging £l6 3s 6d. Cows and heifers also traded well and the top price of £l4 ss, paid for a heavy Shorthorn cow, was the best since last spring. Other classes also sold well. Fat pigs were not quite so keenly sought after today, and light to medium porkers in particular showed a drop in values. Store pigs, however, were again exceptionally dear. Quotations:—Extra heavy prime steers, £ls 5s to £l6 11s; heavy, £l3 7s to £l4 2s 6d; medium, £l2 to £l3; small, £9 7s 6d to £lO 14s; extra heavy prime cows and heifers, £lO to £ll 7s; heavy, £8 17s to £9 15s; lighter prime, £7 to £8 12s; light and killable, £4 7s to £6. Pigs.—Baconers, 71s to 86s; porkers, 56s to 70s.
