SOCIAL CENTRE

NEW ZEALAND TROOPS KIWI CLUB OPENED GENEROSITY OF BRITISH (N.Z.E.F. Official News Service. (Received August 13, 3.15 p.m.) CAIRO, Aug. 12 A further practical illustration of the interest of the British community here in the welfare of the New Zealanders was given yesterday in the opening of a new social centre, which will primarily benefit convalescent members of the first contingent. The centre is named the Kiwi Club and was established by the British Red Cross Society at the instigation of its president, Lady Lampson, wife of the British Ambassador. Provision is made for splendid reading, writing, games and refreshment facilities. The club was formally opened in the presence of many distinguished visitors by Lady Lampson, who said that she felt thousands of New Zealand women would give anything to be in her place and be able to spend a few quiet minutes with the men. She added: “ I am only deputising for the men’s wives, sisters, daughters and sweethearts when I say welcome and good luck.” Brigadier Puttick paid tribute to the generosity and kindness extended everywhere by British residents and the assistance given New Zealanders by the British regiments. Lady Lampson spent much time among the convalescents who attended, and later visited other patients.
