TRADE AND PETROL
HARSHNESS ALLEGED EXTENT OF UNEMPLOYMENT GOVERNMENT WASTEFULNESS (By Telegraph.—press Association) DUNEDIN, Tuesday That the petrol shortage is due to economic conditions in the Dominion, not to a world shortage or dearth of tankers, is alleged in a statement by Otago motor garage proprietors, who state that while Dunedin garages have to operate under a cut of approximating 70 per cent of the quantity handled last September, the national effort toward conservation is defeated by wastefulness in Government services. The number of motor trade employees brought to unemployment is estimated at nearly 20,000. An appeal is made for an extra million gallons monthly. The statement alleges that essential food deliveries have been rationalised by proprietors, but they are being hampered by additional pressure, and under the cloak of war emergency are threatened with socialisation of their businesses.
