OBITUARY

MR GEORGE POWELL The death has occurred at Taupiri, after a short illness, of an old resident, Mr George Powell, at the age of 86 years. Landing at Napier from England 65 years ago, Mr Powell came to the Waikato three months later, working for the New Zealand Land Association, which was afterwards known as the Woodland’s Estate. He took up farming at Gordonton in 1883 while still in the employ of the Woodland’s Estate as a carpenter. He later sold his farm at Gordonton, and took up a 1000-acre property at Taupiri, which he farmed till his retirement. Mr Powell built the Pukekura factory, under the supervision of the late Mr Henry Reynolds, this being the first factory in the Waikato. In 1884 Mr Powell married Miss Eliza Carter at Bombay, and the couple celebrated their golden wedding four years ago. Mr Powell was a member of the Waikato Agricultural and Pastoral Association for many years, and was a steward at the summer show in Hamilton until four years ago. He was an excellent judge of stock.

Mr Powell is survived by five sons, Messrs H. Powell. D. Powell (Hamilton), W. Powell (Auckland), G. Powell (Tamahere), C. Powell (Taupiri), and a daughter, Mrs W. Moore (Taupiri). There are 14 grandchildren and two great-grand-children.
