TWO TEAMS EQUAL

COLTS AND AOTEA HOOPER CUP HOCKEY OLD BOYS’ STRONG BID As a result of Saturday’s matches in the Hooper Cup hockey competition, Aotea now shares the lead with Colts. Old Boys, although without the services of a goalkeeper, made a strong bid to wrest the lead from Colts but only succeeded in holding the leading team to a draw, 3 all. Aotea took the measure of Kaipaki by four goals to one, thus moving up alongside Colts at the head of the competition table with Old Boys oniy one point behind. The competition table now reads as follows:

WIN FOR AOTEA KAIPAKI FIGHTS HARD Although the game was fairly even territorially, lack of finish in the circle cost Kaipaki defeat to the tune of four goals to one in its match with Aotea. The Technical team owed its success principally to the fact that it was a better combination in the circle. The teams were: —Aotea: Puch, Bowler, Clark, Hinton, Jenkins, V. Sage, Fountain, Hoff, Powdrill, W. Sage, Lipsey. Kaipaki: Goodwin, F. Boyd, A. Boyd, Farrell, McCarthy, G. Boyd, B. Ganly, Graham, Dunwoody, T. Ganly. Aotea attacked hard in the opening stages and the ball was taken down to the circle along both flanks on several occasions. Hoff initiated an attack down the left side, buj mishit when he attempted to centre However, the other forwards carried on play to the circle. Goodwin came out of goal to stay the rush, but over-ran the ball and left the goal exposed to the invading forwards. The goalie made a determined effort to save the position but was too late to block W. Sage’s goaling shot. Aotea 1, Kaipaki 0. Country Team Attacks Kaipaki made progress down the left flank, G. Boyd heading two attacks. Bowler held him up effectively, but Kaipaki’s left outside eluded him on one occasion only to send his centring shot to Graham astray. A centre rush by the country team’s forwards a minute later, however, was more successful. A loose attack brought them right to the circle and T. Ganly took the defence by surprise with a hard shot into the corner of the net from fairly far out. Kaipaki 1, Aotea 1. Powdrill and W. Sage later broke through Kaipaki’s defences and brought the ball right to the goalmouth. Goodwin attempted to kick clear, but Sage hit the ball practically right off his boot into the net. Aotea 2, Kaipaki 1. The country team’s fullbacks, F. and A. Boyd, were tackling well and blocking smartly, frustrating any attempts to goal, while Farrell in the half-back line was sending away splendid clearing shots time aftei time. Kaipaki threatened Aotea’s goal on several occasions and went very close to scoring, but appeared quite unable to cap off its circle movements. Goal to Powdrill All of the Technical team’s forwards narticipated in an offensive down the centre. They were held up at the edge of the circle, but Powdrill broke through on his own and made no mistake in sending a hard shot into the net. Aotea 3, Kaipaki 1. Aotea had another opportunity when Fountain broke through to the circle and centred across to Powdrill and Hoff. However, Farrell intercepted and sent the ball away nicely. The country team attacked in turn and Ganly brought the ball right to the goal-mouth. However, he was bustled by the defenders and his goaling shot went astray. Not long before the final whistle, Jenkins scored for Aotea from a melee in the circle, leaving the score: Aotea 4, Kaipaki 1. Messrs Ewan and Bogue were the umpires.

DRAWN GAME OLD BOYS AND COLTS In a ragged but keenly contested match, C-olts drew with Old Boys, 3 all. Fortunes alternated throughout the .game and the final stages saw both teams fighting hard for supremacy. The teams were:—Old Boys: Broadbent, Crump, Olive, Ross, Ojala, Chard, Vercoe, Ewan, Wright, Sutherland. Colts: McKinnon, H. Tozer, Salisbury, Jane, Harvey, Moiling, Campbell, Curteis, Bogue, Perrett, Tozer. The game had not been long in progress when a corner gave Old Boys an opportunity. Ewan sent in a hard, accurate shot that was deflected off a defender’s stick into the r.et. Not long afterwards, when the Colts team was attacking, Bogue took advantage of a pass and found the net with a hard shot. Colts 1, Old Boys 1.

The next goal was a splendid one. Old Boys attacked down the centre. Ewan placing his team in a handy position with a hard shot. Vercoe followed it up fast and was successful with his goaling effort. Colts drew level again, when Harvey, in the circle, passed to Bogue, the latter flicking the ball into the open goal. Colts 2, Old Boys 2. Colts’ goal was threatened when Sutherland centred and Ewan followed the ball into the goal-mouth. However, Colts’ backs were fully alert and managed to send the ball away to safer territory. From a free hit, Old Boys attacked again, but the Xo-’anMiti lilt too vigorously

in the circle and the ball was sent behind. Ewan made a good attempt to goal from a corner, but his effort was well blocked and the defenders fought their way clear. Colts had a chance when hardhitting brought the forwards to the circle. Further points seemed likely to result from the melee in front of the goal, but a wild hit resulted in the ball being sent behind. Colts Ahead Bogue attempted to goal from a corner, but the ball was well blocked. Gane followed in and sent the ball into the net, but a goal was disallowed because of a prior infringement. Curteis, however, gained possession from the free hit and sent the ball hard into the net. Colts 3, Old Boys 2. The Old Boys team was not slow to retaliate and forced a comer after a series of vigorous attacks. Ewan equalised the score when he received and sent a long shot into the centre of the net. Old Boys 3, Colts 3. Play swung up and down the field after this with both teams fighting hard for a deciding goal. Colts put the ball into the net on one occasion but a sticks infringement prevented a goal being allowed. The game ended with the score unaltered, 3 all. Messrs Jenkins and Gracie were the umpires.
