MILITARY BALL
BRILLIANT FUNCTION QUEEN OF SOUTH ATTENDS The Cambridge Town Hall, so often the scene of spectacular and brilliant functions, was once again the setting for a pageant of gaiety and colour when the Cambridge Returned Soldiers’ Association held a military ball on Thursday night. A reception to the Queen of the South provided added sparkle to the entertainment for the entrance of Her Majesty and hep Maids of Honour caught the imagination of many present. Members of the executive of the Returned Soldiers’ Association and their wives, the Deputy-Mayor, Mr A. H. Nicoll, and Mrs Nicoll, and military officers were presented to the Queen. Lieutenant-Colonel E. M. Mackersey, Officer Commanding the 16th Waikato Regiment, addressed the assembly, explaining how the funds raised at the function were intended for recreational facilities lor the regiment. The Queen of the South, Mrs Gordon Matthews, was robed in her coronation regalia and was attended by Mrs A. A. Lockett (Cambridge), Mrs Moody and Mrs McDonald (Hamilton), Mrs H. Wills (Te Aroha), Miss Lois Ryan (Matamata), and Miss B. Larner (Morrinsville), all of whom wore ivory satin frocks and coronets and carried bouquets of red and gold flowers. Four trainbearers, Barbara Richardson, Judith Hanna, Gay Rishworth and Helen Ariell, were frocked in period frocks of cream taffeta.
Patriotic decorative effects predominated among the background of greenery. Flags were draped on the stage and the walls of the hall, or fluttered in banner array overhead.
