WOMEN’S GOLF
PATRIOTIC FUNDS BENEFIT A most successful day in aid of the club’s patriotic fund was held on the St. Andrews links last Monday. With perfect weather and the links in good order, everybody had a most enjoyable day’s golf, and the fund benefited to the extent of over £l2 10s. The home club was particularly glad to welcome so many players from the Te Awamutu and Lochiel Clubs. The best gross score of the day was done during the morning medal round by Mrs Seyb, who turned in a card of 80, which, on a seven handicap, won her the senior trophy. Mrs Gower also did a good round of 89—16, 73, to take second place, while Mrs Glanville (Te Awamutu) came in third with a score of 82—6, 76. The juniors returned some splendid cards. Mrs Beange, Mrs Anchor (Lochiel), and Mrs Savage all played three under their handicaps, Mrs Beange winning the trophy on the count back. Mrs Beattie reduced her handicap by two strokes, and Mrs Signal knocked one off hers, while Mrs Jewell played a nice round of 91 gross, which was right to her 19 handicap. Mrs James, Mrs Bindon, and Mrs Thomas all played just one over their handicaps, and as they have been playing very steadily lately, are expected to hand in reductions any day. In the afternoon a four-ball best-ball bogey competition was played. The best card came from Mrs Qualtrough and Mrs Thomas who came in 4 up, which was a very good effort. They were closely followed by Miss Quinn and Mrs Howcroft (Te Awamutu) 3
up, and next came four pairs who were all 2 up, Mrs Bennett and Mrs Batt, Miss Kay (Te Awamutu) and Mrs Bindon, Mrs Lee and Mrs Chalmers (Lochiel), and Mrs Signal and Mrs Hall (Lochiel.). Mrs Mander won the trophy for putting. Qualifying Round For Horton Cup On Wednesday the qualifying round for the Horton Cup was played. The weather again was kind and a large field of golfers took part in the game. The list of those to qualify was headed by Mrs Morrison and Mrs Berry, who both played 2 below their handicaps. Then came Mrs Bindon with nett 71 and Mrs Signal and Mrs Edwards with nett 72. Mrs Sole, Mrs Worley, MJs Thomas and Mrs S. Bennett were next all playing one stroke over their handicaps. Mrs McDonald carded a fine gross 80. The L.G.U. medal was won by Mrs Edwards in the seniors, with Mrs S. Bennett in second place. Mrs Morrison won the junior trophy from Mrs Berry on the count back.
We are very pleased to see the rapid return to form of two players who have not been on the active list for two or three years. Mrs Bindon and Mrs D’arcy Smith have both earned 19 handicaps lately, which is very good after only a few months’ play this season. The club is reminded that the entries for the South Auckland tournament close with the secretary next Wednesday, August 14, 1940.
