LONE PACIFIC ISLAND (By Telegranh.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Friday Communication with Palmerston Island, in the northern Cook Group, was established by wireless on July 17 and was available for public use on July 19, states the Rarotonga correspondent of the Press Association. The wireless station, which has been built mainly for meteorological purposes, brings a small community of some 100 persons into direct communication with Rarotonga and the outside world. Palmerston Island, which is inhabited by descendants of William Marsters, who settled there in 1862, has been unfortunate as far as hurricanes are concerned. In 1914, 1926 1931 and 1935 hurricanes have damaged the island and left the inhabitants dependent for food almost entirely on fish until relief came. Communication by schooner has been most infrequent owing to the lack of exports. With the erection of this station there are now eight sub- | stations in the outer group.
