CALF POOL SCHEME
CHOOSING FROM LORRIES NORTH WANGANUI DISTRICT (By Telegraph.—Special to Times) WANGANUI, Friday The Northern Wanganui Calf Pool is the first to move in answer to the Government’s appeal to save heifer calves in the interests of the “ moreproduction campaign.” At a meeting of the pool committee, it was decided to allow any farmer to take heifer calves off the bobby calf lorries, provided that each calf is paid for on weight according to schedule, plus one shilling for the carrier and 2s 6d for the pool. A separate book will be carried by carriers for entering these transactions, which will be on a strict cash basis. Farmers who are putting out good heifer calves are asked to label or mark these animals so that the carriers can place them in separate pens on the bobby calf lorries in readiness for farmers to choose. It was mentioned by the chairman, Mr L. C. D’Ath, that this was a war effort m response to the Govern-
merit’s appeal, and though it was by no means a desirable way of building up a high-producing herd, it had the advantage of being capable of being put into operation at a moment’s notice. The decision made affects calves collected between the Wanganui and Waitotara Rivers, the district over which the Northern Pool Committee has jurisdiction.
