HELP FROM COLONIES MONEY FOB AIRCRAFT DEFENCE OF FREEDOM (United Press Aesn.—Klee. Tel. Copyrlffet) LONDON, August 9 The Minister of Aircraft Production, Lord Beaverbrook, announced that contributions from the public for buying aircraft total £2,407,000. The Uganda War Fund Committee has sent Britain £225,000 as a first instalment for the purchase of Spitfires or bombers with the request that the aeroplanes be named Uganda, says a British official wireless message. The Kenya-Uganda Railway and Harbour Administration has made a loan of a second £IOO,OOO free of interest for the duration of the war. An eminent Brazilian, who for many years has been associated with British enterprises, has sent £IOOO to the British Treasury as “my war contribution to your great country, defending freedom and justice in tma world. It is a simple gift and not a subscription to any loan.” A committee cf influential citizens and United States residents ha* been formed in Havana to colled funds for the Allied Red Cross and other war charities. Assistance From Samoa A public meeting was held in Apia to consider Western Samoa’s war effort, to hear the report of a committee previously set up and to elect a permanent committee to continue efforts to raise £SOOO. In little over a week £673 has been received and there are good prospects of securing the full amount. The original committee was reelected with the addition of further members, including three leading Samoan high chiefs, Malietoa, Tamasese and Mataafa. The acting-Admin-istrator, Mr A. C. Turnbull, was elected chairman of the committee. Captain H. M. Rushworth, formely M.P. for Bay of Islands, gave an interesting address on his experiences in the Great War and on some aspects of the present war.
