DRAINAGE RATES
TAUPIRI BOARDS AREA SEASON FOR INCREASE Rates on the various subdivisions In the Taupiri Drainage Board’s area were struck at the monthly meeting, the clerk, Mr R. P. Hazard, explaining that the reason for the general increase was the fact that the board had decided to budget for 18 months ahead. The State Advances Corporation requested an early payment of interest and sinking fund on the Woodlands loans, and in its letter to the board inquired why the dues were not paid earlier. It was stated that the unproductive nature of the country in the district concerned and the difficulty in collecting the rates was the reason for the late payment, and it was decided to advise the Corporation accordingly. The excellent work being performed by the dredge on hire from the Public Works Department was discussed, and it was decided that the board should attempt to purchase the dredge. Mr R. G. Howell, consulting engineer to the board, reported that between June 17 and August 2 the dredge had excavated approximately 13,000 cubic yards of earth while .working on two drains on private properties. Several other fanners were interested in securing the dredge for work on their propr erty. It was decided to draw up a form of contract for its hire to farmers.
