PACIFIC AIR MAIL
FIRST-FLIGHT COVERS A total of 144,959 first-flight covers was carried on the inaugural airmail flight of Pan-American Airways from San Francisco to New Zealand and back, which ended on July 24, a trip which covered exactly 16,447 statute miles in 102 hours 10 minutes of flying time. The total number of covers from each base is given as follows: Auckland 34,202 Australia 3,540 Noumea 30,408 Canton 18,857 Honolulu 26,000* Los Angeles 3,478* San Francisco .... 28,474 Total 144,959 ’'Estimate. The Noumea-Canton covers came second because of the crossing of the international date line, so that they were mailed tomorrow and received today, or mailed today and received yesterday. Civil Aeronautics observers aboard the plane for this flight had a similar experience. They ate “today” a dinner prepared for them “tomorrow.” Hawaii, incidentally, is believed to have originated about 5 per cent of the covers on this flight. There are some ardent collectors in the territory.
