FINES OF £lO5
INCOME TAX CHARGES RETURNS NOT FURNISHED (By Telegraph.—Press Association) AUCKLAND, Friday A series of summons charges brought by the Commissioner of Taxes was admitted in the Police Court by John Charles Edmunds. For the Crown Mr Meredith said Edmunds was a dealer in secondhand cars in a fairly large way at Newmarket, and also owned and trained racehorses. He came from England in 1937, and his business transactions for the past two years had been investigated by the income tax inspector. Edmunds was considered a very unsatisfactory person to deal with, said Mr Meredith, and had not yet made income returns for 1938 and 1939. Default assessments had been made. Counsel for the defence said Edmunds had been careless and there was no intention to defraud. On a charge of failing to furnish returns Mr C. R. Orr Walker. S.M., fined defendant £IOO. and for failure to register under the Employment Promotion Act fined him £5 and costs. The hearing of two other charges was adjourned.
