AUSTRALIAN POLITICS

GOVERNMENT CRITICISED LEADING TO UNEMPLOYMENT DIVISION IN MINISTERS (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) SYDNEY, August 8 Addressing the annual meeting of the Sydney Chamber of Commerce today, the president, Mr Gordon Jones, complained that the policy of the Commonwealth Government was leading to serious unemployment. He pointed out that it should be realised that only a relatively small proportion of manufacturers could be directly or indirectly engaged in war activities. The Government’s war policy appeared to have entire disregard of its effect- on employment. “We have the spectacle of the Cabinet pulling in almost as many directions as there are Ministers,” said Mr Jones. “We have one Minister advocating ‘business as usual’ and another urging people to spend less and save every penny. Manufacturers have also found that senior Government officers have held views diametrically opposed to those of their Minsiters.”

Mr Jones contended that Australia’s war policy should be fundamentally based on the maintenance of employment for all employable people.
