RED CROSS SOCIETY
HAMILTON SUB-CENTRE MEETS A report of what had been done by the society for soldiers in the Waikato Hospital during recent weeks was tabled at the monthly meeting of the Hamilton Sub-centre of the Red Cross Society held this week. The hospiital and school had been visited practically every day by a committee, with Mrs J. Clough as convener, and over 4000 cigarettes, 188 ozs of tobacco, and several cases of oranges and lemons had been distributed. Some soldiers had arrived in hospital without any equipment and where necessary, razors, blades, combs, toothbrushes, soap, handkerchiefs and writing material as well as many other items were supplied. Relatives had been communicated with and errands carried out on behalf of the men. Mrs Clough reported that there was a heavy demand for handkerchiefs and the society would welcome gifts of old linen which could be used for this purpose. It was reported that the shop in Garden Place was proving a success and gifts to stock its shelves are solicited. A committee consisting of Mesdames Jacka, Croall and Thompson was appointed to deal with any local necessitious cases, which may be brought to the notice of members. The entertainment committee reported that it proposed to hold more frequent dances for members of the classes.
The organisation of the V.A.D. Corps is proceeding apace and a meeting is to be held on August 15 of certificate holders of the society. Votes of thanks were passed to Mrs W. Tudhope, who had donated a flag and flag pole, to Mr N. H. Hooker for his gift of a Red Cross Flag, and to Mrs Smith for placing the Centreway Tearooms at the disposal of the society for the purpose of holding a bridge party.
