RETURN MATCH

AUCKLAND AND WAIKATO TOMORROW S RUGBY CONTEST EXCITING GAME EXPECTED Perhaps the Waikato Rugby representatives’ most important match each year is the annual game againsl Auckland, in Hamilton, where the team’s supporters can all see the play. This year’s King’s Birthday fixture was postponed but, because of the close game at Auckland, c return match was granted. Thu Waikato-Auckland contest will be played at Rugby Park tomorrow when a record crowd can be expected if conditions are favourable The complete remodelling of the ground so that thousands may have an uninterrupted view of the game j will be welcomed for this match, the first important fixture since the renovations to the ground were completed. Waikato has not beaten Auckland since 1933 but tomorrow the side if its members play to form, has a great chance of reversing previous decisions. Of course a great dea! depends upon the weather and tht state of the ground, but for the firsl time for many years Waikato has even prospects whatever the conditions. In previous years Waikatc has not been able to match the Auckland backs for speed, combination and ability, and so a wel ground and greasy ball meant tha‘ Waikato had more chance of victory This year the Waikato backs, undoubtedly, are good and as they are also sound defenders the state of the weather does not affect them any more than it affects Auckland. Not at Full Strength The Waikato team is not at ful strength owing to the defection oi the halfback, J. Broad. His loss will be more severely felt on a fine day and hard ground, as there is no halfback in the territory whe can send out such consistently fasl and well-directed passes. Brown his substitute, is solid and if he concentrates on getting his good backline away and stopping the Auckland forwards coming through the line-outs no blame can be attached to him. He will need far more protection than the forwards gave Broad in Auckland. The Auckland forwards in the match in Auckland were much better as a combination than the Waikato forwards and Waikato will have to keep together more tomorrow. A big fault was the spreading out of the forwards, this allowing the Auckland pack to breafc through the centre. This was noticeable in both scrums and lineouts. The backing up of the loca! team could also have been much better. The Waikato team must expect tc find the combination of the Auckland side greatly improved and hard, low tackling must be the order oi the day. It will have to be remembered that Auckland cannot score without possession of the ball and, with the forwards concentrating upon securing the ball, the backs must be careful not to kick it into the hands of the opposing player). Unless it is a stab-kick for a gap (and that is fatal unless welljudged) Waikato will have to find the line with practically every kick, Both teams have the material tc provide a thrilling game with much spectacular play.
