MR D. J. McGOWAN
(By Telegraph.—Special to Times) WELLINGTON, Monday One of the city’s most prominent figures in public life is lost by the death of Mr Dougall John McGowan, at his residence, Glen Road, Kelburn, yesterday. Mr McGowan was aged 59. At the time of his death he was the senior partner of the Wellington firm of McGowan and Magee, Ltd. Mr McGowan came to New Zealand in 1905. He began on the commercial side of the New Zealand Times, Wellington. Later he was for a time on the staff of the Dominion, subsequently being on the staff of the Waikato Times in Hamilton, and then on the North Auckland Times, in Dargaville. At various times Mr McGowan was chairman of the Wellington Harbour Board, president of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce and the Associated Chambers of New Zealand, vice-president of the Wellington Employers’ Association, president of the New Zealand Carriers’ Federation, and president of the Wellington Rotary Club. He acted as a director of the Centennial Exhibition Company, and was the founder of the Wellington Show Association.
