WORK OF SESSION
GOOD PROGRESS MADE PROGRAMME OF BUSINESS ADJOURNMENT THIS WEEK (By Telegraph.—Special to Times) WELLINGTON, Sunday A substantial amount of business was transacted by the House of Representatives last week, with the result that it should be possible to take an adjournment this week, possibly about Thursday. With the exception of the Broadcasting Account all the items on the main Estimates were approved, the Public Works Statement was discussed and the Public Works Estimates were passed. Under normal conditions this would take at least a fortnight. The supplementary estimates have yet to be presented. These will be introduced and approved before the adjournment. There is also some legislation to deal with, but most of this seems assured of an easy passage. One of the measures is another Finance Bill, which has yet to appear. No information has been given as to its contents, but should there be anything of a contentious nature in the remaining legislation it will probably be in this Bill. No legislation has been presented dealing with the proposed excess profits tax announced in the Budget. So far as the compulsory loan proposal is concerned the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nasn, has announced that this can be brought into operation by the Emergency Regulations Act already passed. No arrangement has yet been made as to the length of the adjournment, but the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, has in mind one of about a fortnight’s duration.
