CHEMICAL WORKS BOMBED FIGHT OVER DORTMUND (Omclal Wireless) (Received July 27, 3.15 p.m.) RUGBY, July 26 In today’s air raids over Germany at Sterkrade the big chemical works, which is one of the chief supply centres for cobalt, nickel and catalyst, used in oil hydrogenations, was heavily bombed by several aircraft, which scored a number of direct hits. Fourteen enemy aerodromes in Germany and Holland were also hit. A Messerschmitt 110 was shot down near Dortmund in an engagement with two bombers, during which all three aircraft, flying at 11,000 feci, were lit up by searchlights. The Royal Air Force bomber operations included raids on synthetic oil plants at Kamen, Bottrop and Castrop, all of which were set on fire. A large factory at Gotha where Messerschmitts are assembled and heavy tanks built was attacked and fires started. Thunderstorms and severe icing conditions again hampered the Royal Air Force bombers. Six German bombers crossed the south-east coast tonight but turned back when fighters appeared.

German bombers also attacked a convoy off the coast of Northern Irei land. British fighters went into action and it is believed one raider was shot down.
