AMATEUR HARRIERS
HAMILTON CLUB LAST SATURDAY’S RUN NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “Cross Country”) On account of the juniors being in Auckland for the Provincial Championships, only a relatively small field participated in the run held last Saturday by the Hamilton Harrier Club from Mrs Jowers’ residence in Wellington Street. The course of approximately seven miles, through the Ruakura district and the outskirts of Hamilton East, was the longest so far attempted this season, and provided the boys with some very good all-round cross-country work. A few more outings of similar distance or even longer would not be any harm, as the majority of our races this year have been only about four or five miles. Particularly was this noticeable when the senior championship was held over the six and a-quarter miles at Te Rapa. Several of the members, who appeared to be making hard work of the final mile on that day would no doubt have done much better had they been accustomed to runhfng over a longer distance. Cliff Rotheram who, until recently, was among the junior ranks, appeared to be the least troubled over Saturday’s course, and, running right up to his usual high form, had no difficulty in leading the pack home. Cliff is running in the Auckland Championships next Saturday and if all goes well he should acquit himself very creditably. The experience gained up there should stand him in good stead for the forthcoming Waikato Championships. Improving Members Another member to catch the eye was G. Wood, w’ho is improving each week, and is now finding his real position with the pack leaders. Claude Hill, showing the benefit of recent open events, also impressed, and was running well up to previous seasons’ top form. If Claude maintains his present level, he should make a very useful unit in the representative team at Te Kuiti on August 10. Bill Choat, who has been off for several weeks, was back among the boys last week. Ron Gardner was also out after being on the sideline for the last two or three weeks. Ron appears to be quite fit although his ankle, which was sprained rather badly while playing basketball, still gives him trouble. It is to be hoped he is fit and well for Te Kuiti. Mrs Jowers was responsible for afternoon tea after the run and this brought to a close a very enjoyable day’s sport.
