RED CROSS NEWS

CAMBRIDGE SUB-CENTRE As the war progresses so the work of the patriotic movements progresses and the Cambridge sub-centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society reports increased activity in its various spheres. A large share of the work has been concentrated on making, sorting and renovating refugee clothing and recently five cases of goods containing nine hundred garments were consigned to the Waikato centre for early despatch overseas. Every Friday at the depot sees large attendances of women who are “doing their bit” by sewing garments for soldiers’ comforts—pyjamas, bedjackets and other hospital needs. A display of these goods is to be held in the Town Hall on Monday next, when the public will be given an opportunity of viewing the work before it is forwarded to the centre. First Aid certificates gained by Red Cross candidates last year will be presented at the function which will include a programme of entertainment. At the monthly committee meeting, Mrs H. A. Pegg, convener of the Junior Red Cross Sub-commit-tee, reported on work carried out in some of the district schools. Junior Red Cross circles had been formed at Leamington School, St. Peter’s Convent and Goodwood School, and apart trom completing courses in first-aid, the children were uniting in war work—the girls knitting wools for which the boys were raising funds. Children at the Maungatautari School have also joined the Junior Red Cross. Boys at the woodwork classes at the manual training department have helped by making a large packing case of splints. Sewing circles have been formed in i several districts where members of ! the Cambridge sub-centre who, owing to petrol restrictions are unable to come to the depot regularly, meet to make garments. The Red Cross__shop, controlled each Friday by a different organisation, has proved very profitable, the funds be- ! ing for the most part used for buying materials for the sewing. The ccmmittee thank the donors of several donations which include the splendid effort of the Cambridge Polo Club, who handed over the entire profits of their recent successful ball; also the Waikato Hunt Club who raised a considerable sum at a recent meet: and the Lyceum Club for several donations.
