AUSTRALIAN PLAYERS

ENTERTAINING THE SOLDIERS WAR WORK IN ENGLAND Australians were the first artists from the Dominions invited to entertain the army and air force in England. An appeal for volunteers brought a rush of talent, including Norah Roberts, Byrl Walkley, Eve Gray, Helen Barnes, Frank Leighton and Albert Arlen, several of whom had already been engaged in national service. Eve Gray, when interviewed, said she was making a film, “Money For Nothing,” at the outbreak of war and completed it during the first air raid alarm. Since then she had been engaged by the A.R.P. organisation. Contracts Have Gone Byrl Walkley explained that she was singing at the Savoy before the war, but now her contracts had gone, so she also had volunteered for the A.R.P. Albert Arlen said: “My play, ‘Counterfeit,’ had just been produced at the Duke of York Theatre and a successful run predicted when the war came and production was abandoned. A three months’ broadcasting contract was also cancelled.”
