WORLD DANGERS
SPREAD OF COMMUNISM JAPANESE IMPERIAL AIMS Two dangers, the spread of Communism and the victory of Japanese imperialism, which, he claimed, might emerge from the present world conflict, were referred to last night by Mr H. H. E. Knight, of the China Inland Mission, speaking in the Hamilton Baptist Tabernacle. He said that in China, where the people had learnt as much of the Russian invasion of Finland as we in New Zealand had, Communism would receive a severe set-back. There it was fully realised that the Soviet’s claims as a champion of the cause of weaker peoples had proved to be without foundation, as a result of the latest move in the Balkans. Mr Knight, who recently returned from China, stated that one of the results of the Sino-Japanese conflict was the impetus which Christianity there had received. It was the greatest in China’s history. He recounted how Christians of the east were treking westward and carrying the religion into parts which previously had not been penetrated by missionaries. It was Mr Knight’s contention that the conflict in China would prove a stalemate. The Japanese could not possibly succeed. So far their invasion had been along the railways and rivers only, and the Chinese were rapidly transporting the rails into the interior, cutting off the Japanese advance and developing that area.
