“DISGRACEFUL SCENE”
INCIDENT AT FRANKTON MAN KNOCKED INTO WINDOW The sequel to an incident at Frankton on November 18 when a man was struck and had his head forced through a shop window took place in the Magistrate’s Court, Hamilton, today. Two men appeared before Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., on charges of strik - ing Ernest Grigg and of using obscene language. Defendants were Albert Senior, plasterer, of Frankton, i and Edward Charles Clarke, labourer, of Frankton. Senior pleaded guilty to the obscene language charge and not guilty to the charge of striking Grigg. while Clarke pleaded guilty to both counts. “On the evening of November 18 both men pulled up in Massey Street in a taxi, and went into a sweet shop,” said Senior-Sergeant G. H. Lambert. “They were both under the influence of liquor. When they came out of the shop the taxi had gone and they accused Grigg of dismissing it. They said they had some beer and fish in the taxi. An argument with Grigg developed and the men struck him. Clarke hit him and knocked his head through a shop window. The men were using obsecene language and altogether it was a disgraceful scene.” Admitted to Probation Evidence of the incident was given by Grigg and by Robert Williamson, an eye-witness. Constable H. Paton read a statement in which Senior said he told Clarke to nit Grigg. Senior did not hit Grigg himself. Clarke also admitted that he hit Grigg. On the obscene language charges, each defendant was fined £2. On the charge of striking Grigg, each was placed on probation for one year, on the usual statutory conditions, and with special conditions that they pay Grigg £1 10s compensation, the cost of the broken window, amounting to 7s 6d each, and witnesses’ expenses, 11s each. Further conditions were that they take out prohibition orders and refrain from attending race meetings during the term of the probation.
