SURVEY COMPLETED
RUKUHIA AERODROME SURFACE DEVELOPMENT WORK AWAITING CABINET’S DECISION Advice that the engineering survey at the Rukuhia Airport had been completed and that the Public Works Department was ready to proceed with development work when the decision of Cabinet was forthcoming, was received at a meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council last night, when a letter was received from the engineer-in-chief and under-secre-tary of the Public Works Department Mr J. Wood. “I am now in a position to advise you that the engineering survey of the proposed extensions to the Rukuhia aerodrome has been completed, while a survey plan is expected to be forwarded from the Hamilton suboffice,” said Mr Wood. “The completion of the final grading plans and estimates wall take place some time, but it is expected that by the end of March Cabinet should have given its decision as to the proportion it will contribute towards the total cost o t surface development.” Total Costs It would be appreciated, continued the writer, that no proposal could be placed before Cabinet until the total development costs were known, but in view of the amount of £12,500 being provided by the Airport Authority for the purchase of the land, it was probable that Cabinet would agree to provide the greater portion of development costs, which would include removal of existing buildings if they were not to be re-sited. It was not the function of the Government to provide any additional buildings, which might be considered necessary by the Airport Authority, air services using the aerodrome, or the Aero Club, such as administration buildings, hangars or club rooms. “If a favourable Cabinet decision were received in March, this department would be in a position to proceed immediately with the developmental work,” continued the writer.“ Although it is thought desirable that ; this work should proceed irrespective \ of the war, and that, because civil flying is now so much curtailed, the time is very opportune, I cannot definitely state when the work will be proceeded with until Cabinet’s de- ; cision is given on receipt of concrete proposals for the airport.” The letter was received.
