WATER SUPPLY
LARGER PIPES NEEDED POSITION AT HAMILTON EAST RECOMMENDATION TO COUNCIL Recommendations that a larger water pipe be installed at Hamilton East to cope with the increased demand were made by the borough engineer, Mr R. Worley, in a report received at a meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council last night. 44 Owing to the large number of new houses erected in Hamilton East in recent years,” said Mr Worley. “ the distribution system has been found inadequate this summer. A complete check-up has been made during the last few weeks by pressure gauges, and it has been found that the six-inch main pipe in Grey Street between Clyde Street and Wellington Street is too small. “ If this is replaced by a nine-inch pipe at a cost of between £350 and £4OO, it would appear that the troubles will be remedied. I recommend that this be done.”
In another report the engineer stated that should a prolonged dry spell be experienced this summer it might be necessary to restrict either the hours of hosing or the method of hosing. However, it was not expected that such action would be necessary if the people used the water rationally. In the event of such an occasion arising between last night’s meeting and the meeting in January the engineer suggested that the Mayor, Mr H. D. .Caro, and the chairman of the works committee, Mr H. M. Hammond, be empowered to act. On the motion of the Mayor both of the engineer’s recommendations were adopted.
