GERMAN FREIGHTER ARAUCA FLEES FROM BRITISH CRUISER VESSEL MAY BE INTERNED (United Press Assn. —Erec. Tel. Copyright) NEW YORK, Dec. 19 The German freighter Arauca, fleeing from a British cruiser, anchored at Port Everglades, southern Florida. This was the climax of a chase along the Florida coast, in which a shot was fired across the freighter’s bows in an attempt to stop her. Port officials said that if unarmed the Arauca would be allowed to remain indefinitely, but if armed she must depart within 24 hours. There is a strong possibility that the Arauca will be declared a German auxiliary naval vessel and will be interned.
It is understood in Washington that an investigation has been ordered to determine how the vessel, which left the Mexican port of Vera Cruz five days ago with New Orleans as her declared destination, happened to be near Florida. As she was carrying Mexican oil, it is felt that possibly she was preparing to refuel naval craft. The Arauca’s radio apparatus has been sealed. The motor-ship Arauca, which had previously been sheltering at Vera Cruz, is one of the latest additions to the Hamburg-Amerika Line. Ot 4350 tons, she was launched at Vegesack last May.
