TRANSPORT FIGURES PROFIT AT NEW HIGH LEVEL INCREASE OF 13 PER CENT (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. A statement by the Minister of Transport, the Hon. R. Semple, shows the licensed passenger service industry to have created new records. The number of passengers carried is up 14.5 per cent to 26,655,000 vehicle miles, 8.3 per cent to 25,455,000; number of trips 14.7 per cent to more than 2,000,000; net profit to the new high level of £132,790, an increase of 13 per cent, bringing it into the category of a major industry. Just on £1,196,000 was paid in fares, and with £121,000 odd for the carriage of mails, newspapers and parcels, the revenue is £1,317,000. More than 1300 vehicles ran 2,000,000 trips and covered 25,000,000 miles.
The industry paid employee drivers and owner-drivers £356,000 in wages, besides giving employment to mechanics, cleaners, office employees, etc.
