LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL MR A. CAMPBELL APPOINTED (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Tuesday The Governor-General, Lord Galway, has appointed Mr Archibald

Campbell, of Port Chalmers, to the Legislative Council.

Born at Port Chalmers, Mr Campbell was employed on the wharf as a young man, but in 1912 he was appointed secretary of the Port Chalmers Waterside Workers’ Union. He has also been secretary of the Combined Otago Waterside Workers’ Union, a member of the Otago Harbour Board and chairman of the Port Chalmers Fire Board. He was elected to represent Chalmers in the House of Representatives at the general election in 1935, but, before the election in 1938, the Chalmers electorate was amalgamated with adjoining electorates, and Mr Campbell did not seek re-election to the House.
