HAMILTON GIRL
SUCCESS IN SYDNEY SHORT HOLIDAY AT HOME Miss Betty Welch, the Hamilton girl who has done so well in Australia, returned this week to spend Christmas with her parents. After winning the elocution championship and the radio test at the Sydney Eisteddfod, Miss Welch was engaged by the George Edwards company for the recording of plays, and has just had her contract with that company renewed for a further six months. She has taken all kinds of parts, her latest being as a city actress in a new “Dad and Dave” series. Miss Welch is finding life in Sydney very pleasant, particularly the many interesting contacts one is able to make. She has joined the New Zealand Younger Set, a body that has endowed a cot at the Karitane Hospital and is giving entertainments for different charities. She has also taken part in programmes at the military camp, and says the Australian soldiers are very appreciative audiences. Miss Welch is surprised at the number of New Zealanders in Sydney. “One meets them everywhere,” she said. Miss Welch will have only a brief stay at home, as she is due back in Sydney at the beginning of the New Year to take up her contract. She hopes to visit Wellington before her departure.
