WATER SUPPLIES

NORTON AND MELVILLE INSTALLATION OF MAINS (Times Special Reporter) TE AWAMUTU, Monday The opinion that, with the exception of the small pipes, most of the mains for the Norton and Melville water supplies would be laid by the end of the year was expressed by the engineer, Mr W. G. Macky, at the monthly meeting of the Waipa County Council today. The Hamilton Borough Council had made good progress with the work. In spite oil the many inquiries in the Waikato 'and in Wellington and negotiations by Mr C. A. Barrell, M.P. for Hamilton, with various Government departments, no definite information had been received regarding the supply of 14-inch and -inch piping. The engineer said that water meters were on hand and on receipt of application forms, accompanied by the necessary fees, meters would be installed as soon as possible. The work would be carried out provided the owners could make arrangements to supply the council with the necessary length of piping to connect the main to the property. Forest Lake-Maeroa Area

A plan showing the extent of the private reticulation in the Forest Lake-Maeroa area was submitted by the Hamilton Borough Council. Details were also given of water mains bounding on the area and a scale of charges of water to be sup- ; plied. It was explained by the engineer that a petition for a water supply to the Forest Lake-Maeroa area was lodged with the council a considerable time ago but until the necessary information was obtained from the Hamilton borough, little progress, beyond preparing a plan of the area, could be made. I The engineer did not favour anything being done at present in view of the difficulty in obtaining necessary materials. He suggested that proposals be made to the ratepayers before any concrete plans could be put forward. Figures regarding costs could be submitted but not so as to commit the council to anything definite. Instructions were issued to the engineer to prepare information on the above lines. POWER SUPPLY BOARD'S MONTHLY MEETING Mr J. T. Johnson presided at the monthly meeting of the Te Awamutu J Electric-power Board when there Iwere present also Messrs W. J. North, N. M. Lethbridge, J. C. Montefiore, S. C. B. Macky, J. B. Teasdale and I Colonel J. Matson. Leave of absence [was granted Messrs J. G. Sutherland land A. L. Storey. 1 Advice was received of the con-

sent of the electricity controller to the erection of 27.75 chains of extension along Hayes Road, Kihikihi. In reply to questions, the secretarymanager, Mr D. T. McArthur, said that four interruptions of the service during the month had been due to faults beyond the control of the board; that the board supplied timeclocks on a monthly charge and the clocks were inspected by the board’s staff before installation and that while there had been some difficulty in obtaining reliable clocks, those at present available were more reliable. The manager replied to Mr Lethbridge that it was not anticipated that the maximum capacity to supply power would be reached for some time, and war conditions would restrict installations because of the difficulty in obtaining equipment such as stoves. Mr Lethbridge pointed out that the sales for current in November was £3970 7s 3d which was second to the record month of £4414. The manager reported on the negotiations with the Local Government Loans Board with regard to the reticulation of the Pirongia-Kawhia special area. He had emphasised the reasons for the board’s desire to get authority for a loan poll and also the value of the work in stimulating production. The Loans Board had asked for an estimate of the cost of imported material and this had been supplied at £17,500 to £IB,OOO. He had received an assurance that the application would come before the Loans Boards’ next meeting. In commenting on the application, Mr Lethbridge said that it seemed strange that while money for such purposes was not available, a Government department could spend £70,000 on a building.
