NGARUAWAHIA NEWS

FAREWELL EVENING The Parish Hall, Ngaruawahia, was filled to capacity recently with parishioners and friends of the Rev. J. A. Day, who is leaving Ngaruawahia to take up an appointment with the Bishop of Polynesia as teacher in an Indian Boys’ School, Labasa, Fiji Islands. Mr Day, who has been on the teaching staff of the Ngaruawahia Public School, for the past year, has been an ardent worker in the Holy Trinity Church, especially among the younger people. The evening was spent in dancing interspersed with iteijis from Miss Phyllis Muller and Masters Rogers. Music was supplied by Mrs J. T. Holt and Mr B. Heather. The master of ceremonies was Mr J. T. Holt. In presenting Mr Day with a wellfilled wallet, Mr Knighten spoke in eulogistic terms of the work Mr Day had done, and wished him every success in his new work. Other speakers were the Rev. J. D. W. Raine, Mr J. Gawkrodger and Mr A. Small. Among those present were:—Mesdames G. Brownlee-Smith, J. D. Joy, G. Marriott, A. Small, E. Fuller, A. Parker, M. Loughman, Proctor, A. Potter, F. Hall, W. Skev/es, B. Bunn, A. Smith, C. Quintal, V. Muller, G. Wilmot, E. Clout, B. Heather, D. Goodwin, A. H. Couch, L. Sewell, J. Little, M. Sherlock, Evans, Rogers. Misses A. Armstrong, D. Good, J. Loughnan, M. Rayner, D. Couch, G. Raiti, E. Ensor, I. Raiti, M. Collins, P. Muller. PARENTS’ DAY A pleasant function, Parents’ Day, was held at the Ngaruawahia School, to mark the end of the year’s work. There was a good attendance of parents. Excellent displays of drill were given by the pupils. Mr F. Gilligan, the headmaster, welcomed the visitors, and Mr J. R. Redpath, chairman of the school committee, presented the following awards:—Dux medals, Gladys Bate and Len Scott; prize donated by the headmaster for the best garden plot at a child’s home, Laurie Sewell. Afternoon tea was served by wives of the committee members, assisted by the senior pupils, and the parents inspected the year’s work in the various classrooms.
